Approaches and Objects in Translation Studies Today
Copenhagen University, May 2004

Under the auspices of the Network for Language and Culture 2004, Language
and Cultural Identity, a conference will take place with the title

Approaches and Objects in Translation Studies Today

Time: 5-6 May 2004
Venue: Copenhagen University, Denmark
Language: English
Registration: As soon as possible, with one of the below. Participants will
pay a modest fee, to be announced in our 2nd circular (about 15 January
2004)

The conference is aimed at PhD students as well as senior scholars with an
interest in discussing the interaction of language, culture and translation.

Keynote speakers are Susan Bassnett (literature and culture) and Kirsten
Malmkjær (linguistic approaches to translation).

The questions we would like to address could be formulated as follows:

What are the typical objects of study in TS today, ”objects” taken to mean
both the different kinds of texts and messages studied and the (con)textual
elements and aspects taken into consideration?

And, on the other hand, what approaches (theories and methods) lend
themselves particularly well to the study of specific objects? Or,
conversely, what aspects are typically being foregrounded by specific
approaches?

In addition to the two keynote speakers, there will be a number of papers of
30 minutes each (including 10 minutes for discussion). At the moment, there
are 6-7 slots open for contributions from participants. Please send an
abstract (max. 500 words) as soon as possible, and no later than 15 January
to one of the undersigned. Abstracts should be sent electronically.
Contributers of paper proposals wil be notified no later than 15 February.

Selected papers from the seminar will be published.
