CFP: Manipulating Violence: Weaponry, Combat and Swordplay in Performance
(01/15/04; 7/12/04-7/17/04)

Paddy Crean Symposium, University of Southern Queensland
Brisbane-Toowoomba, Australia, July 12-17, 2004
Organized by the International Order of the Sword and the Pen

This interdisciplinary forum, in conjunction with the Paddy Crean
International Stage Fight Workshop, invites papers by professors, graduate
students and independent scholars on the history, theory or application of
performed violence. Topics are welcome from any period or culture that relate
to the making of violence in performance or the representation of violence in
dramatic literature. Scholarly presentations which deal with any of the
following will be welcome: the practical application of violence; historical
studies in staged combat; literary, cultural, social history and criticism;
sexual-gender issues; aesthetics; power, politics and ideology. Proposals for
panels are also welcome.

Please send a one-page abstract to Kyna Hamill, Director of Research (IOSP),
at kyna.hamill@tufts.edu by January 15, 2004. Presenters will be notified by
February 1, 2004.

As the Symposium is a two part-event, paper presenters can choose to
participate only in the forum, or for an additional fee, also participate in
the workshop section, where classes on various aspects of staged fighting will
be taught by an international faculty of Master instructors. More information
on the location of the Symposium including the forum and workshop is available
at www.iosp.org.

What is the IOSP? - The International Order of the Sword and the Pen is a
world-wide organization dedicated to the international exchange of information
on "staged combat" for theatre, film and television. Based on the principle
that staged combat is an art form unto itself, the IOSP combines the study of
both historical and present-day socio-cultural influences with theory and
specific techniques in order to better inform and explore all aspects of
violence in performance
