Nation or Notion?
An international Performance Studies conference
University of Wales, Bangor
June 5-6 2004
After interest in the topic worldwide, and some sense that many more people
would like to attend but found the March date difficult, the directors have
shifted the date of the conference into the summer to assist the greatest
possible exchange of ideas, and allow as many people to benefit as possible.
Having our Centre for Creative & Performing Arts building at our disposal, this
is simple enough to do, and the benefit of the summer months overlooking the
Menai Straits here in North Wales are doubly attractive.
Nation or Notion? is an international conference examining ideas of
national identity, nationalism and nationhood, and covering all areas of
performance and theatre studies -- 'critical' research as well as
discussions/examples of research-through-practice.
The conference wil be held in the Centre for Creative and Performing Arts
at the University of Wales, Bangor, close to the magnificent Snowdonia
mountain range.
The weekend conference will include papers, workshops, presentations and
performances, and will coincide with a Special Issue of 'Studies in Theatre
and Performance' (guest eds: Graeme Harper & Nic Ros) concentrating on the
theme of 'Nation or Notion?' from a Welsh perspective. The Nation or
Notion? conference itself, however, is interested in these themes globally,
and in relation to all 'national' arenas . . . .
Issues raised might include: nationalism versus internationalism in
performance, 'minority' or indigenous language performances and the idea of
nation, colonialism and 'post'colonaillism and performance, bilingualism or
multilingualism and performance, theatre and nationality, the politics of
national theatre, theatre and the economies of nationalism . . . to name
just a few areas.
The deadline for proposals is: January 31st 2004
[1] Papers should be 20 minutes in length.
[2] Presentations should be no more than 40 minutes
[3] Performance or workshop suggestions should be submitted to the
conference directors as soon as possible.
Conference Directors are:
Graeme Harper -- g.harper@bangor.ac.uk & Nic Ros - n.ros@bangor.ac.uk
