CALL FOR PAPERS: REGIONAL RACIAL FORMATIONS
The ASA Students Committee will sponsor and organize a panel on Regional
Racial Formations for the 2004 annual meeting, to be held in Atlanta,
Georgia, November 11-14. We are soliciting three student papers concerned
with the intersection of race and region. Our goals are to highlight
student work in this important area of research and to initiate a
student-led discussion of the role of the region in defining race and vice
versa.
We are particularly interested in (a) papers that consider how regional
identities are based on or grounded in particular constructs of race
and/or racial inequality; (b) comparative studies of the varying meaning
of race from region to region; and (c) papers that address communities and
regions that have been under-studied, such as Asian Americans in the
Midwest or South. Submissions from a variety of disciplinary trajectories
are welcomed and encouraged, as we believe that a consideration of
literature, history, film, etc. will only deepen our understanding of the
ways that regional and racial identities intersect. This panel will be
submitted in Talk format, to encourage lively discussion and the use of
alternative presentation methods.
Please submit in Microsoft Word format (ending in ".doc") an abstract of
no more than 250 words, as well as a one-page curriculum vita, to the
Students Committee care of Tamiko Nimura by January 10, 2004, by email at
tnimura@u.washington.edu.
