Second Call for Papers:

The Third NEW-CUE Writers Conference and Workshop in honor of Rachel
Carson will be held at The Spruce Point Inn on the waterfront in
Boothbay Harbor, Maine from June 15 through 18, 2004. It will be an
interdisciplinary event, blending scholarly inquiry, relaxation and
exploration, and submissions for possible presentation will continue to
be accepted through January 15th.

Robert Finch, co-editor with John Elder of The Norton Book of Nature
Writing, and author of five books of essays, including Death of a Hornet
and Other Cape Cod Essays, will be a featured speaker. Other speakers
will include noted author and ocean conservationist Carl Safina who will
deliver the Keynote Address; Newbery Medal-winning author Jean Craighead
George who will be joined by her daughter, author Twig George, a former
Director of Education for the Center for Marine Conservation in
Washington, D.C.; and poet Andrea Cohen who is the director of the
Blacksmith House Reading Series in Cambridge, MA. In addition, there
will be a performance of a one-woman play, A Sense of Wonder, based on
the life and work of Rachel Carson with author/actress Kaiulani Lee.

The theme of the 2004 NEW-CUE Conference/Workshop will be “Living
Waters,” and daily concurrent sessions will include readings of accepted
creative and scholarly submissions. Please submit if your work will add
to a discussion of these, or other, theme related topics:

-creative and critical approaches to literature of the sea
-importance of the seas to the survival of the planet
-the integration of natural science with creative writing
-the intersection of science with the humanities
-love of the sea and the creatures both large and small that live within
it
-cultivating a sense of wonder among children and adults as an emotional
response to the living world
-sea as a metaphor
-the sea as a symbol of ecological integrity
-marine economy in the 21st Century
-protection and preservation of aquatic habitats
-local, regional, national and international perspectives
-urban and suburban issues related to water quality
-ocean as wilderness
-sea as a living landscape
-explaining and solving problems related to underwater wildlife
-critical essays on contemporary authors

Submissions will need to include a cover page with the author’s full
name, institutional or organizational affiliation (if applicable), and
contact information including mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail
address. Submissions or abstracts should be typed and no longer than
three pages, with the author’s name included on each page. Presenters
will need to register for the Conference/Workshop. Please send by

participants and that early registration is recommended. Registrations
will be accepted on a space-available basis. Participants whose work
will be accepted for presentation at the 2004 Conference/Workshop will
