EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS
‘LITERARY COTERIES AND POETIC FRIENDSHIP(S) IN ENGLISH LITERATURE,
1600–1800’
2-day conference at The University of Wales, Lampeter
2-4 April 2004
Literary coteries, friendships between poets, as well as relations between
various groups or schools of poets are essential to the understanding of
trends and fashions in literature. Arbiters of taste, patrons, as well as
poets of fortune and ability, provided an attractive, stimulating or
advantageous environment in which poetic production and exchange of ideas
were encouraged.
While traditional literary history has focussed on the major representatives
of a given period, the circles with which these major figures were dealing
in everyday life have rarely been explored. The London literary scene has
been examined in detail in recent years in a number of contexts such as the
book trade, publishing or the dissemination of literature and literary
fashion. Yet, the interactive aspect of relations between independent
literati like Aaron Hill and poets such as James Thomson, have not been
sufficiently explored. Also, the provinces as areas of literary activity and
provincial production of literature are still subjects that are in urgent
need of scholarly investigation. As part of the revision of the traditional
canon of literature, it is pertinent to shed light on literary
relationships, as well as on the influences that poets exerted on each other
through contact in coffee houses or salons.
The conference organizer seeks conference papers of 30 minutes on a subject

essays on the conference theme. Selected papers (which will have to be
revised before submission) will be included in the volume.
