II INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AMERICAN THEATER AND DRAMA
UNIVERSITY OF MΑLAGA
Acting America: the Plays and the Players
18-20 May 2004
The University of Mαlaga, Spain, will host its second international
conference on American theater and drama from 18-20 May 2004. The
conference is co-organized by the Departments of English, University of
Mαlaga, Georgia State University, Atlanta, and the Department of Modern
Languages, Universitι Libre de Bruxelles.
The general topic is Acting America: the Plays and the Players, and we
hope to advance scholarship on the American theater not only by exploring
specific texts and authors, but also by analyzing the stage experience,
from theory to practice. We would like to invite proposals for 20-minute
papers for the following sessions:
-- The plurality of American identity: forming, transgressing,
transcending, gendering, race-ing and erasing the American identity.
-- Acting femininities and masculinities.
-- Alternative stage strategies. Directing American drama.
-- Interpreting war. Race, gender and violence.
-- Performance and innovation.
-- Politics and theater. Language, power and myths in American drama.
-- The ensemble experience.
Suggestions for panels on other related topics and complete panels,
workshops or discussion sessions will be taken into consideration.
The following keynote speakers have confirmed their attendance: Chris
Bigsby, Jerry Dickey, Bonnie Marranca, Marc Maufort, Matthew Roudanι, David
Savran and Susan Harris Smith.
Please send a 500 word abstract, with brief CV, to Lola Narbona at

Accommodation will be at the historic Seminary, the Casa Diocesana de
Espiritualidad, in Mαlaga, at very reasonable prices.

ACCOMMODATION and REGISTRATION
The conference will be held at the Casa Diocesana de Espiritualidad in
Mαlaga. We encourage conference participants to lodge there with us so
they can enjoy all the activities to the full. We are unable to make other
arrangements for those who prefer to stay elsewhere.
In order to reduce expenses we are offering the following packages. These
package prices include lodging for the 4 nights of May 17 to 20 and meals
from the evening of May 17 to the morning of May 21. Unfortunately, it will
not be possible to make arrangements for individual nights or meals, and
there will be no refunds for missed meals or shorter stays.
