Call For Papers and Performances
Dance Under Construction VI
UC Riverside April 16-17, 2004
Hosted by the Department of Dance History and Theory, UC Riverside
Dance Under Construction is a graduate student conference that has
established itself as an interdisciplinary forum for presenting student work
on dance, the body, and performance. It has consistently attracted scholars
and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, research interests, and
academic programs.
This conference is the sixth in a series of ongoing colloquia, which
originated as an initiative of the graduate students of UCLA Department of
World Arts and Cultures. After traveling to other UC campuses, such as UC
Riverside and UC Davis, Dance Under Construction will be returning to UC
Riverside, where it will continue to serve as a platform for communication
and exchange among all the UC campuses and graduate departments both
nationally and internationally.
This years theme, “Nomadic Spaces,” seeks to understand the shifting
relationships between dance and territory through an investigation of
performance studies and practices that resist borders and enclosure in order
to deconstruct points of fixed origin, discipline, identity, and geography.
The territory in question may be defined as inter/intra/transnational,
disciplinary, bodily, (meta)physical, or theoretical space facing
contestation.
Papers analyzing dance, film, text, cultural production and other
performative genres are encouraged. Performative papers that address the
conference themes through differing interdisciplinary means are welcome.
Proposals for panels are also encouraged. It is a particular aim of Nomadic
Spaces to disrupt boundaries between academic and performative modes of
research and presentation.
Proposals should include an abstract of 500 words or less for a 15-20 minute
presentation or, panel and should be sent to Shakina Nayfack and Celia Weiss
at NomadicSpaces@hotmail.com. Please be sure to include your full name,
contact information, and technical requests.
Proposals must be received no later than February 2nd, 2004.
