CALL FOR PAPERS

"Sharp Eyes" III:
John Burroughs and his Contemporaries, Near and Far
June 6-10, 2004
A Summer Conference at
The State University of New York at Oneonta

        As with the first two "Sharp Eyes" conferences on John Burroughs and environmental literature at SUNY Oneonta, this conference will honor the influence of John Burroughs and explore current Burroughs scholarship, but will also direct attention toward a particular theme of significance to environmental writing and scholarship today.

The 2004 conference will focus on the work of those nature writers who were Burroughs's contemporaries during his long career, extending from 1860 to his death in 1921. Papers are sought on topics such as the following:
                        * Burroughs's contemporaries, including (but not limited to) Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, John Muir, Ernest Thompson Seton, Mary Austin, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Celia Thaxter.
                        * Nature writing and the growth of the conservation movement.
                        * Ecocritical approaches to the literature of this period.
                        * Perspectives on the Harriman Expedition to Alaska (1899).
                        * The Lake Mohonk "Friends of the Indian" Conferences.
                        * Burroughs's international contemporaries.
                        * Writers and artists of early field guides.
                        * Nature education in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
                        * Nature poets (Bryant, Whitman, et al.).
                        * Nature writing, slavery, and the African-American experience.
        Papers on any aspect of John Burroughs's life and career are also encouraged.
