The Past, Present, and Future of Performance in Ireland

I am seeking papers for a panel on Irish performance for the 2004=20
IASIL, to be held in at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and=20=

coinciding with the Galway Arts Festival, 20-24 July.

Since the 1990s, Irish theatre companies have increasingly taken note=20
of performance styles, especially those involving greater physicality.=20=

Companies such as Barabbas, Macnas, and Blue Raincoat, have drawn on=20
techniques from European schools and methods, including Ecole Jacques=20
LeCoq and Th=E9=E2tre du Soleil, while often seeking to develop a =93new=94=
=20
Irish performance style. It is hoped that this conference panel will be=20=

an important step in acknowledging the role of movement in Irish drama=20=

and in examining whether this change is a true shift or merely a fad.

Paper are invited that address any aspect of Irish performance.=20
Ideally, papers on the panel will include a broad spectrum of Irish=20
performance, including not only contemporary Irish drama, but medieval=20=

performance styles, folk drama, and more.

Paper topics might include but are not limited to:

Irish folk performance
Irish language performances
Medieval performances in Ireland
The work of specific theatre companies who are including different=20
performance styles in their performances, including but not limited to:=20=

Macnas, Barabbas, Blue Raincoat, Corcadorca, Kabosh, The Machine,=20
Gallowglass, Corn Exchange, Calipo
Community theatre
Outdoor theatre and performance
Collaborative theatre
The intersection of theatre and dance
New media in theatre performance
The blending of video and theatre
Theatre that moves through space
Theatre performances and companies who operate without traditional=20
fixed texts

Please send 250-word proposals for 15-20 minute papers to Dr. Christie=20=

Fox, Sam Houston State University at clfox8@yahoo.com by January 31,=20
2004. Please note that all presenters must be members of IASIL by March=20=

1, 2004.
