CFP: Wendy Bishop's Legacy in Writing Pedagogy (03/01/04; MLA '04)

Wendy Bishop's Legacy in Writing Pedagogy.

Wendy Bishop¯author of Released into Language, Elements of Alternate Style, and several other texts on writing pedagogy and editor of yet other collections¯recently died while battling cancer. It's important that an opportunity exist at the next MLA convention--in December 2004 in Philadelphia--to document the influence that Bishop's work has had on the field of writing pedagogy and to honor her contributions to writing classrooms and their teachers around the country.

How did Bishop's work shape writing pedagogy and classroom practices? What theories and approaches did Bishop most strongly advocate? How does Bishop's work blur and distinguish the fields of composition and creative writing? How have her ideas about such issues as risk-taking, deferred grading, contract grading, and other aspects of writing courses been adapted for others' classrooms? Where does Bishop's work fit in relation to the others who've shaped writing pedagogy? Where has Bishop's work fallen short? How did Bishop mentor teachers and writers both directly and indirectly? How can we best continue to extend and build upon Bishop's work?

While the proposed special session intends to document and analyze the theoretical underpinnings and practical application of Bishop's vast writings about composition and creative writing pedagogy, the session intends also to serve as a tribute to Bishop's contributions, generosity, encouragement, and mentoring in the field.
