Exporting Religion, Translating Belief: Exploring American Religions in
Europe
April 16-17, 2004
Kyiv, Ukraine
Beginning in the fifteenth century, many Europeans traveled to the land
that would come to be called "America" with the purpose of converting
the land's inhabitants to Christianity. More recently, the flow of
religious missionaries has reversed and thousands of citizens of the
United States now seek converts in Europe. What messages do these
missionaries bring with them? How are they received in Europe and how do
they go about winning converts? What has been the historic connection
between Europeans and the followers of American-based religions? The
purpose of this conference will be:
* to ask how religions with specifically American histories and
religious organizations with headquarters in the United States bring
their message to European countries
* to explore the influence of religious practices and religious
language developed in the United States on the established Protestant,
Catholic, Jewish, and Orthodox communities of Europe
* to examine the relationship between American religion and
American capitalism whose simultaneous presence in Europe and
particularly Eastern Europe seem poised to effect significant, and
controversial, cultural change
Keynote Address:
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Colleen McDannell,
Sterling M. McMurrin Professor of Religious Studies and Professor of
History at University of Utah (U.S.A.) and author of numerous books
including Material Christianity (Yale University Press, 1995) and
Heaven: A History (Yale, 1988).
Invitation:
We invite exploratory papers describing the history, beliefs, or
practices of U.S. originated religions and/or their activities in
Europe. Papers may discuss theoretical questions of religious, national,
or cultural identity. We are particularly interested in examining
cultural translation and cultural flow between the United States and
Europe. We also invite representatives of religious organizations to
present their activities and/or their perceptions of the work of U.S.
based organizations to conference participants.
