1st Graduate Symposium hosted by Theatron to be followed by
THE TENNESSEE WILLIAMS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
organized by the Performing Arts Department,
Washington University in St. Louis
Hurst Lounge, Thursday, February 12, 2004
2-4 P. M.
Tennessee Williams spent sixteen years of his life in Saint Louis where he
attended primary and high school and Washington University (1936-37). His
move out of St. Louis happened in 1937, when the shy, young Williams was
completely disappointed after his (still unpublished) play "Me, Vashya"
placed fourth at the Washington University annual playwriting contest.
Life in St. Louis, in general, was not particularly happy for Tennessee
Williams, but it nevertheless left an important mark on his work. Starting
from this point this Symposium will reconsider Tennessee Williams and
explore unknown aspects of his early work and ways in which it shaped the
playwright's career.
We invite graduate students to submit their papers (not abstracts) on any
aspect that may shed new light on Tennessee Williams's work. We would be
particularly interested in papers that consider Williams's most
autobiographical plays, Glass Menagerie (1945) and A Lovely Sunday for
Creve Coeur (1978), as well as his short stories (such as "The Resemblance
Between a Violin and Coffin," 1950), or early poems ("Old Things," 1926).
The essays selected for 20-minute presentations at the conference will
also be published, with Me, Vashya, in a special issue of Theatron devoted
to the sesquicentennial of Washington University in St. Louis (Spring
2004). Submissions should be addressed as a Microsoft Word attachment to:
Vassiliki Rapti(vrapti@artsci.wustl.edu) and/or Heidi Spear
(heidispear1@yahoo.com).
Deadline: January 24, 2004.
