Southeastern Conference
On Christianity and Literature

Suggested Topics
This conference proposes to explore especially the intersections between
Christianity, suffering, and loss in literature. Papers might address one
of the following topics:
Creating meaning in suffering or loss
Death/mourning rituals
Christian asceticism/martyrdom
Representations of the suffering servant
Loss of faith, meaning
Violence and the sacred
Sacrifice
Penance/punishment
Representations of hell, purgatory
Christian perspectives on war
Illness (physical, psychological, spiritual)
Suffering and redemption
Suffering and faith
We also encourage creative works on these topics and plan to have at least one section of readings. Selections of poetry, short stories, or sections of novels with a reading time of up to 15 minutes are welcomed.
In addition, the Southeastern Conference on Christianity and Literature
welcomes papers on any topic demonstrating the relationship between
imaginative literature and the Christian faith.
Guidelines
Submitted papers should range in length from eight to ten typed pages with an anticipated reading time of fifteen to twenty minutes. Please submit your completed manuscript to Sandra R. O'Neal either by email

College, Columbia, SC 29203.
While completed, full-length papers will receive first consideration, 1-2 page abstracts of papers may also be considered.
