International Conference On:
Cultural Identity, Gender and Everyday Life Practice: Hong Kong Cinema of
the 1970s
August 15-17, 2004 Hong Kong

Department of Cinema and Television, and Humanities Program of Hong Kong
baptist University announce its Call for papers for the 2004 international
conference, August 15-17, on "Cultural Identity, Gender and Everyday Life
Practice: Hong Kong Cinema of the 1970s" in Hong Kong. The conference is
co-sponsored by Hong Kong Film Archive and Hong Kong Baptist University.
Exhibition and film shows of the 70s cinema will be held at Hong Kong Film
Archive during the conference period.

The conference aims to examine and survey the interconnection between Hong
Kong culture and cinema in the 1970s, and to study the traditions of Hong
Kong cinema and the socio-cultural contexts from which the film industry
developed in that period. It was during the seventies that Hong Kong cinema
began to draw wider international attention and created an interested
overseas audience of non-Chinese-speaking film fans. In other words, the
globalization of Hong Kong cinema became more visible from the seventies. It
was also in that decade that Mandarin-language cinema had been gradually
replaced by the revival of Cantonese cinema, thus resulting a more
culturally and linguistically unified image of Hong Kong cinema. On the
other hand, the growing influences of local Cantonese television channels
constituted a significant contributing factor to the development of a
stronger Hong Kong cultural identity of that period. We believe that Hong
Kong cinema of the 1970s is richly rewarding and historically exciting for
studying its cultural practice, and ideological and sexual articulations.
