Nature and Environmental Writers  College and University Educators
(NEW-CUE), a non-profit, environmental education organization, invites
submissions for possible presentation at its Third Annual Writers
Conference and Workshop in honor of Rachel Carson, June 15-18, 2004 at
The Spruce Point Inn in Boothbay Harbor, ME.

The theme for the 2004 Conference/Workshop will be Living Waters, and
scholarly research, essays, poems, fiction, childrens literature, and
play scripts that illustrate contemporary environmental issues are
encouraged.

The Conference/Workshop will be held at The Spruce Point Inn, one of the
finest waterfront resort inns on the East Coast. It will be an
interdisciplinary event, blending scholarly inquiry, relaxation and
exploration. Daily sessions will include presentations by award-winning
authors, readings, workshops, performances and guided outdoor activities.

Featured speakers include Carl Safina, recipient of the 2003 John
Burroughs Writers Medal; Cape Cod essayist Robert Finch; Newbery
Medal-winning author Jean Craighead George and her daughter, Twig
George, a former Director of Education for the Center for Marine
Conservation in Washington, D.C.; and poet Andrea Cohen, director of the
Blacksmith House Reading Series in Cambridge, MA. In addition, there
will be a performance of a one-woman play based on the life and work of
Rachel Carson with author/actress Kaiulani Lee, as well as workshops,
presentations and guided activities including hikes, tide pool
explorations and a trip to the Burnt Island Lighthouse included in the
schedule of events.

Please submit if your work will add to a discussion of these  or other
theme related - topics:

-critical essays on contemporary authors
-creative and critical approaches to literature of the sea
-importance of the seas to the survival of the planet
-the integration of natural science with creative writing
-the intersection of science with the humanities
-love of the sea and the creatures both large and small that live within it
-cultivating a sense of wonder among children and adults as an emotional
response to the living world
-sea as a metaphor
-the sea as a symbol of ecological integrity
-marine economy in the 21st Century
-protection and preservation of aquatic habitats
-local, regional, national and international perspectives
-urban and suburban issues related to water quality
-ocean as wilderness
-sea as a living landscape
-explaining and solving problems related to underwater wildlife

Submissions will need to include a cover page with the authors full
name, institutional or organizational affiliation (if applicable), and
contact information including mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail
address. Submissions should be typed and no longer than three pages,
with the authors name included on each page. Presenters will need to
register for the Conference/Workshop. Please send by surface mail, fax

Enrollment for this event is limited to 100 participants and early
registration is recommended. Registrations will be accepted on a
space-available basis. Participants whose work will be accepted for
presentation at the 2004 Conference/Workshop will need to register for
