Eighteenth-Century Soundscapes
Proposed Special Session, MLA '04, Philadelphia
This proposed panel would examine the presentation of sound or noise in
eighteenth-century literature – sound as harmonizing or discordant, as
soothing or disorienting. Possible paper topics
might include, but are by no means limited to:
sound and the presentation of the labouring classes
the representation of urban noise
sound and disorientation (or orientation) in narratives of travel
and exploration
eighteenth-century music
