CFP: Revising Horror: Texas Chain Saw Massacre / The Ring / Dawn of the Dead
(3/7/04; MLA, 12/27/04-12/30/04)
Not just a "remake," Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2003 is a remarkable revision
of its low-budget, hard-hitting predecessor. The female lead is stronger, the
wheelchair-bound character of Franklin has been left in 1974, and the sadistic
rage of "Leatherface" now has an explanation. Why? How are these alterations
to be interpreted?
"Remakes" such as Texas Chain Saw Massacre (2003), Dawn of the Dead (2004)
and even The Ring (from Ringu) have been revised in the hopes of reaching and
entertaining a new audience. This panel hopes to explore the pitfalls and
successes of these "remakes." A potential panelist can select one of the above
"remakes" on which to focus or, perhaps, find a common thread in horror "remakes"
to explicate. (Moreover, feel free to e-mail me if a different, newly
remade, horror-film is preferred.)
This is to be a proposed special-session for the 2004 MLA Convention in
Philadelphia. Please send 250-word abstracts by March 7 to Erica Dymond
ejd3@lehigh.edu.
