Recovering Reading

Reception histories and medieval texts - methodological and
historiographical considerations

April 14-16, 2004

Queen's University Belfast

In recent years, literary and cultural historians have been increasingly
concerned with the contexts in which medieval texts were read, circulated,
owned and annotated. Such interest develops against the backdrop of
reception and reader-response theories, as well as histories of the book and
of reading more generally.

However, a paucity of 'evidence' renders reception histories of medieval
texts speculative at best, and scholars are often left to elaborate theories
of reading and ownership based on marginalia or other arguably 'ephemeral'
criteria. This conference would like to ascertain whether this is an
historical problem or whether it reflects the limitations of contemporary
models of transmission and reception. Furthermore, the conference hopes to
consider the cultural, ideological and subjective operations at work in
textual reception and explore the possibilities of developing new or more
nuanced methodological and theoretical vocabularies for recovering reading
processes.

The conference invites discussion of case-studies of medieval and early
modern texts and/ or reception situations with ancillary consideration of
the methodological and theoretical issues which pertain to recovering
reading.

A set of workshop sessions has already been programmed but we invite
proposals for papers for other open session. The deadline for the
submission of 500 word proposals is FRIDAY MARCH 19, 2004.
