CALL FOR PAPERS: "Ireland in the Renaissance"

Renaissance Society of America (RSA) Conference
Cambridge, England, April 7-9, 2005. Deadline for abstracts: May 15.

Look through any index of comprehensive studies of early modern
Europe: despite its strategic location between Great Britain, the
Continent and the New World, and despite its long history of
invasions, influence, and trade, early modern Ireland
continues to be neglected as an object of serious multidisciplinary
study. Yet great politicians such as the earls of Ormond, great
theologians such as Archbishop James Ussher and great
"renaissance men" such as the epic poet and political strategist
Edmund Spenser did not operate in a vacuum of ideas and
controversy.

This panel seeks to further explore this world and to better situate
Ireland within the paradigm of early modern intellectual and
political developments in Europe. Papers are therefore invited on
all subjects but especially the following:

--Art and/or Architectural History --Literature (non-Spenserian)
--Archaeology --Political Theory
--Settlement and Trade (including colonial studies)
--Historiography --Spanish and/or French Relations
--The legacy of the Italian "renaissance"
--The Renaissance Prince and/or Governor
--Relations with the Netherlands --Humanism and Humanist Education
--Irish literature --Mythology --Military/Naval History
--Reformation/Counter-Reformation Theology
--Scottish and/or Welsh Relations
--Gender Studies --Urban Studies --Race/Ethnic Studies

Willing panel participants will be strongly considered for inclusion
in a collection of essays on the same subject, forthcoming from
Four Courts Press (Dublin) and co-edited by Michael Potterton
(archaeologist/historian) and Thomas Herron (literary studies).

Queries welcome. Please send all abstracts (firm limit 150 words,
preferably by e-mail) by May 15, to either
