CALL FOR PAPERS
Great Writing 2004
Writers, Creative Writing and the Contemporary World
Saturday July 24th -- Sunday July 25th 2004
This fifth annual conference will be held at the University of Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK.
This year the theme of the conference is: ‘Writers, Creative Writing and the Contemporary World’ .
Proposals for papers (20 minutes) in the fields of creative writing and/or the critical study of contemporary writing are most welcome.
Participants are invited to interpret the conference theme as they wish.
Examples of possible areas of interest might include:
Themes/ subjects/issues in Creative Writing Pedagogy
Writers in the 21st Century
Specific critical and/or creative studies in poetry, fiction, screenwriting, writing for children etc . . . .
Contemporary Writing and new technology.
Cultural, literary or other studies of creative writing or contemporary literature or film/TV/performance writing etc .
Book, publishing, performance or reader/audience studies .
Closing date for proposals: 30th April 2004 -- early submission is greatly encouraged.
For international visitors: Portsmouth (UK), which is approximately 1.5 hours from Heathrow/London airport, was the birthplace of Charles Dickens and the Portsmouth/Hampshire area has connections with a wide range of writers, past and present. The Isle of Wight, which is 10-15 minutes from Portsmouth by fast ferry/hovercraft, is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Among its many attractions, is the role it has played in the lives of such writers as Dickens, Tennyson. Keats, Swinburne and JB Priestley and in the works of such writers as John Wyndham (The Day of the Triffids) and Julian Barnes (England, England).
