2004 M/MLA Annual Convention
November 4-7, 2004, Hyatt Regency St. Louis, Missouri

CFP: Special session at the Midwest Modern Language Association, St.
Louis, 2004; entitled: "Looking Backward: Edwardians, Moderns, and the
19th Century"

I seek papers that examine the revisionist relationship between Edwardian
and Modernist British writers to their 19th century precursors. Many of
the most prominent writers of the early 20th century sought to
differentiate and define themselves and their aesthetic vision and
practice in calculated opposition to the Victorians. In the various acts
of disavowal and disregard, might we find a profound anxiety of influence
that necessitates Edwardian and Modernist revisions and misreadings?

This session will seek to historicize the symptomatic response of early
20th century writers to 19th culture and literary practice.
