CFP: Epic Revision in Romantic and Victorian Literature
Dramatic shifts have occurred in the genre of epic moving from Homer to
Milton to Pope. However, a traditional discussion of the epic form falls
out of the critical conversation about nineteenth century literature.
What form did epic take during this period? How did these writers modify
the notion of epic in their work?
This panel will examine how British writers of the 19th century revised
the epic. In what ways did they imagine themselves expanding the
tradition? What is the relevance of the epic form in this period? Does
the possibility of a 19th century epic alter our understanding of what is
epical?
