Comic Books & Popular Culture
Call for Papers/Presentations
The Popular Culture division of the South Atlantic Modern Language
Association (SAMLA) invites papers or proposals for presentation at the
annual meeting to be held November 12-14, 2004 at the Hotel Roanoke and
Convention Center in Roanoke, Virginia
Deadline: 3/15/04
The study of Popular Culture strives to interpret media and other cultural
materials that construct and reconstruct world perspectives, collective
behaviors, and even identities by providing symbols, myths, and resources.
In 2004, the Popular Culture division will turn its attention to the world
of comic books. Abstracts are invited that discuss aspects of comic books
as popular culture (heroes, villains, gender, art, audience, history,
impact, violence, etc.). The deadline for abstracts (500 words) is March
15, 2004. Because this panel deals with popular culture, I encourage you
to incorporate a visual element (handouts, slides, and/or video clips)
into your paper/presentation.
Please submit:
Paper/Presentation Title and a 500-Word Abstract
Brief vita or a one-paragraph biography.
