Gibson's Film and the Passion Tradition
MLA, Philadelphia, December 27-30, 2004
This special session seeks to situate Mel Gibson's The Passion of the =
Christ in relation to traditional passion literature, imagery, and =
piety. What does it mean to suggest that the film reflects a medieval =
sensibility? What are its doctrinal and aesthetic parameters, and how =
might those be described in relation to traditional meditations on the =
passion? What kind of piety does it depend on and invite? Submissions =
from a range of fields and disciplines are welcomed: medieval and early =
modern literature, biblical and Hebraic studies, art history, film =
theory, and religious history. Topics might include the film's =
