Call for Papers for Flannery O'Connor Society Panel
PERFORMING DOUBT:
CONTEMPORARY READINGS OF FLANNERY O'CONNOR
at
2004 Meeting of Midwest Modern Language Association
ST. LOUIS, November 4-7, 2004
We invite proposals that consider ways in which contemporary readers engage
Flannery O'Connor's texts as performances of doubt. How does her focus on
Protestant characters enact interrogations of Catholicism? How do her
physically unattractive characters enact interrogations of the corporeal?
How does her fierce governance of reader reception in Mystery and Manners
enact interrogations of her own art? Proposals might, for example, discuss O
'Connor's Gnostic elements, her angle on feminism, the intersection between
her own literary aesthetic and the critical climate of the day.
250-word proposals or 20-minute papers by April 2, 2004 to
