Writing the Elizabethan World

Elizabethan England was a country reformulating its place in the world,
both literally in geographical terms and metaphorically in terms of
politics and culture. This session at the Midwest Modern Language
Association in St. Louis in November will focus on literary and textual
expressions of this reformulation, exploring the ways in which works of
drama, poetry, and prose functioned to illuminate or inflect the rising
tide of nationalism, cultural identity, subjectivity, and geographical
awareness that marked the last half of the sixteenth century. Abstracts and
a brief bio by April 10 to Kimball Smith, University of Iowa,
