Special Session: Steinbeck: Contemporary Interventions

With the impetus that John Steinbeck has suffered too long from the stigmas
of low cultural capital, this panel is organized around combining
contemporary cultural and theoretical approaches to this understudied yet
influential American author and his works, both canonical and
non-canonical. Perspectives from cultural studies, gender studies, new
historicism, deconstruction, post-structural psychoanalysis and others
venues are encouraged. By opening up Steinbeck to these perspectives, this
panel seeks to both demonstrate and invigorate his influence inside and
outside academic circles.

Please e-mail a single-page abstract along with a brief vita or biography
(both as MS Word attachments) to douglas-dowland@uiowa.edu by April 15, 2004.
