Modernist Studies Association 2004 Conference
Vancouver, British Columbia
October 21-24, 2004
This proposed panel will consider the modern novel and its role in identity formation and transformation. We are interested in exploring the vexed relationship between modernism and identity in various configurations that include the problematic notion of identity raised in the cultural context of modernity and the ways in which modern identity is problematized by and in contemporary critical studies. Proposals can address central concerns ranging from issues of representing race, gender, class, and sexual orientation to representations of national and political identities. Possible approaches include but are not limited to: body and trauma theory; gender and desire; transnational or global studies; cultural or ecocritical approaches. Please send 500 word abstracts to Lisa Perdigao at lkperdigao@aol.com and Tracy Banis at tlbanis@aol.com by April 15, 2004.
