Political Fictions and the Poetics of Faith
A Graduate Student Conference
University of Leeds, UK July 10-11, 2004
“In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every
case gotten at second-hand, and without examination”. –Mark Twain
This conference will focus on the interplay of literature, religion and
politics. We welcome papers that examine textual manifestations of sacred and
secular beliefs, and their relationship to one another, whether harmonious or
conflictual. Participants may want to consider the dynamics of religious and
political texts in communities, past and/or present.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
• Religion and cultural difference post-9/11
• Religion as an agent and/or opponent of (inter)nationalism
• Faith, literary form and ideology
• Canon formation
• Religious institutions and literary production
• Blasphemy, heresy & censorship
• Pilgrimage
• Missionary activity
Applicants are encouraged to interpret the conference topic broadly;
submissions dealing with all periods and regions, or from the perspective of
any discipline, are welcome.
The Conference will be structured around themed sessions, each composed of
three 20 minute papers.
Please send proposals of no more than 300 words to
politicalfictions@hotmail.com by no later than April 30th 2004.
