CFP: Theories of the Will (3/29/04; MLA)
Proposed Special Session for the MLA 2004 in Philadelphia, Dec. 27-30,
2004.
Nineteenth-century US and European theories of identity and action depended
on the now largely obsolete concept of the will, which essentially
materialized liberal agency while grounding post-mesmerist psychology.
Papers are solicited that touch on any aspect of the will. In particular,
papers that address its relation to gender, narrative, governmentality,
“race,” film, and identity are welcome.
E-mail a 250-wd abstract and brief cv not later than 29 March 2004 to Louis
Suarez-Potts at luispo@mac.com .
