CFP: Black Arts Movement (4/15/04; MMLA, 11/4/04-11/7/04)
"New Scholarship on the Black Arts Movement": This proposed special session
will examine the writers, critics, collectives, and institutions associated
with the Black Arts movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. I am seeking
papers that reexamine the movement's quest for a “Black Aesthetic,”
reconceptualize the Black Arts canon, understand the movement in
interdisciplinary terms, or locate the movement within broader cultural and
political currents. I would also like to include papers that offer fresh
analysis of individual texts, writers, groups, or institutions located at
either the center or the periphery of the movement. The 2004 MMLA Convention,
to be held in St. Louis from Nov. 4 to Nov. 7, will take “Performance” as its
general theme, so proposed papers addressing Black Arts theater, public
poetry, music, etc. will be welcome.
Please send a brief abstract (of no more than 200 words) and a CV to Matthew
Calihman at mscalihm@artsci.wustl.edu or to Matthew Calihman, African and
African American Studies, Campus Box 1109, Washington University, 1 Brookings
Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130. Abstracts and CVs should reach me no later than
April 15, 2004. I will be happy to answer email inquiries.
