Modern Literature: The Trace of History
M/MLA 2004; St. Louis, MO (11/4/04-11/7/04)

For modernism, which has frequently regarded the past either as something
irrevocably lost or as something from which to break free, history is
troubling.
Consequently, the past has haunted the modern, provoking lamentation, anxiety,
and even irreverence. This panel will investigate the multiple ways that the
past is registered in modern literature. Such an investigation includes (but
is
not limited to) looking at: nostalgia, the rejection of cultural and social
tradition, attempts to locate lost origins, sensitivity to the present’s
indebtedness to the past, representations of historical events, and formal
experiments intended to make readers and spectators aware of the processes of
creating or consuming art. Essentially, papers will address how modern
literature traces history or is marked by history’s traces. Such an inquiry is
especially pertinent in light of the recent concerns in the academy about
historical problems, which modernism suggests is indeed a complex and not
easily
resolved issue.

Abstracts should be approximately 250 words. The deadline for submission is
April 5, 2004.
