Apologies for cross-listings.

CALL FOR PAPERS for a special session entitled
"Sex and the Victorian City" at the M/MLA Annual
Convention, Nov 4-7, St. Louis, Missouri

The session proposes to examine the way the
urbanization of nineteenth-century Britain produces
versions of Victorian masculinity and femininity.
Mid-century novelists like Elizabeth Gaskell and
Charles Dickens formulated sex--in terms of
street walkers and prostitutes--and the city--as
London, Manchester, and other urban centers--in their
many works, and Dickens’s journal Household Words was
the venue for various fictional and non-fictional
versions of the urban experience. Papers addressing
the Gaskell, Dickens, or other writers who foreground
the city as a space for sexual vagrancy, prostitution,
class conflict, emerging gender roles, or other topics
are welcome.
