Call for Papers
Modernist Studies Association conference, Vancouver,
21-24 October 2004
Conference theme: Other Modernisms/Modernism’s Others

PANEL: MULTILINGUAL MODERNISMS

Exile and cultural estrangement have long been
recognised as fundamental to much modernist writing.
This panel seeks to examine the explicitly linguistic
dimension of such cultural conditions and to explore
the impact of multilingualism on modernist literature.
Papers are invited on any topic related to
multilingual and translational processes in the
literature of the period.

Possible topics might include (but are not limited
to): the writer as translator and/or self-translator,
writing in a foreign language, the incorporation of
foreign languages within the text, the hybridisation
of language, the author’s estrangement from the mother
tongue.

Please send 500 word proposals and a brief
biographical description to Juliette Taylor
<j.a.taylor@leeds.ac.uk> by 26 April 2004. Deadline
for submission of the panel proposal to MSA is 3 May
2004.
