Call for Papers:
"The Return of the Author in Shakespeare Studies"
(The New Shakespeare: A writer and his readers)
A One-Day Conference, Saturday 3 July 2004
The Shakespeare Programme at Lancaster University (UK), in conjunction
with Manchester University Press, will be hosting one-day conference.
Plenary Speakers: Lukas Erne, Gary Taylor, and Stanley Wells.
The possibility that Shakespeare did not write primarily for theatre
audiences, but with readers in mind, has far-reaching implications for the
study and performance of his plays. The aim of this conference will be to
situate the emerging ideas of Shakespeare as a literary artist in relation
to his own representation of writing and reading, and in the context of
the history of authorship, printing, manuscript circulation, great house
culture, private patronage, and the non-metropolitan stage. The conference
will take place at John of Gaunt's castle, in the heart of historic
Lancaster.
Proposals are invited for papers of up to 25 minutes. They may be made by
e-mail, and should include an abstract of 200-300 words. The deadline for
submissions is May 3. Proposals should be addressed to Dr. Jane Rickard,
Department of English & Creative Writing, Bowland College, Lancaster
University, Lancaster LA1 4YT (e-mail: j.rickard@lancaster.ac.uk).
