Bristling Impossibilities, a symposium in honor of the acclaimed American=20
novelist and playwright James Purdy, is being held at New School University=20
in New York's' Greenwich Village on December 3, 2004. In conjunction with a=20
roundtable of writers such as Gordon Lish, James McCourt, Richard Howard, and=20
Matthew=20
Stadler commenting on Purdy's work, there will be two academic panels=20
devoted to such possible subjects as: neglected aspects of Purdy's oeuvre=20
including his poetry, plays, and novels such as The House of the Solitary=20
Maggot and Narrow Rooms, his new book of short stories (published only in=20
England and not reviewed by the major literary presses) Moe=E2=80=99s Villa, Purdy=E2=80=99s=20
stature in the American and World literary canon, the scope and variety of=20
his work in terms of its tone, style, and vision, notions of sexuality,=20
gender, and eroticism, and the mythic dimension of Purdy=E2=80=99s world (the=20
interpretation of Greek myths in his work, such as Gertrude of Stony Island=20
Ave) as well as what is most often overlooked, his conception of the comic -=20
