Call for Papers
Third International Conference
“With Cuba in the Distance”
Introduction
The Cultural Association “With Cuba in the Distance” is organising its third
Conference under the patronage of Cadiz Town Hall, the Hispanic-Cuban
Foundation, the New York Cuban Centre, the Swedish International Liberal
Centre, among many other sponsoring and collaborating institutions.
The conferences “With Cuba in the Distance” are a forum of independent
thought on the Cuban culture in exile where not only Cuban intellectuals but
also researchers and academics of diverse origin come together.
This conference “With Cuba in the Distance”, organised in Cadiz (Spain)
since 2001, has become the most important meeting dealing with Cuban
cultural studies within the European Union and one of the most important
world-wide.
As in the previous conferences, this third meeting invites debate about the
Cuban reality. It defines itself as a cultural studies event where
reflections on sociological, economic, psychological and juridical matters
(as well as reflections on other fields) can be voiced.
Following the two previous conferences and the parallel projects that
emerged from the conferences, more than 100 authors have had their work
published in Cadiz, and over thirty artists have shown their work in
exhibitions, catalogues and front covers of different publications. Besides,
as part of this work, more than two thousand books of all these editions
have been sent to Cuba, and a Cuban editorial fund has been created with
more than a thousand titles donated by authors and editors.

proposals that do not fulfil these requirements, those that are presented
after the deadline or when the number of proposals is superior to the
possibilities of presentation during the week of the Conference.

Proposals must give priority to scientific analysis based upon the results
of research. The foundation and argumentation resources used will also be
valued. Any type of personal or ideological exaltation should be avoided as
much as possible

Tribute to Carlos Victoria
During each conference “With Cuba in the Distance”, a representative figure
of Cuban culture in exile is rendered tribute to. During the first
conference in 2001, the editor Juan Manuel Salvat was rendered tribute to.
In 2003, during the second conference, the playwright Matías Montes Huidobro
was the object of diverse ceremonies.
The Third Conference “With Cuba in the Distance” will dedicate its tribute
to one of the best Cuban narrators of all times: Carlos Victoria. Because of
this, we invite researchers and people interested in participating in the
conference to present analyses of his work, which will be part of the
special sessions co-ordinated for that purpose.
Centenary of Alejo Carpentier
2004 is the centenary of Alejo Carpentier´s birthday, one of the most
important writers of the Cuban and Hispano American narrative, and to
celebrate such an occasion the proposal of sessions and works related to the
author of El Siglo de las Luces will be granted special importance in the
conference programme.
General Co-ordinator of the Third Conference “With Cuba in the Distance”
Ms. Maria Luisa Ochoa.
Maria Luisa Ochoa is a literary researcher and lecturer. Her research and
publications are based on critical studies about Latino literature,
especially that produced by authors of Caribbean origin. PhD student at
Universidad de Huelva (Spain), her dissertation research deals with the
Cuban American narrative.

Registration Dates
The deadline to participate presenting papers is September 10 2004. However,
there will be no deadline for people just attending (room capacities
permitting).
Registration Procedure
In the web page www.promacc.com/encuentro3 there is an registration model
that all participants must fill in and send by e-mail, as attachment, to
the e-address: encuentro3@promacc.com
So as to guarantee a balanced programme in contents as well as a not
excessive number of simultaneous sessions everyday, there will be a limit to
the reception of papers. Subsequently, the registration dates could be
closed before the appointed date.
Researchers interested in organising sessions around certain topics should
send their projects. The booking of their session will be made the moment it
is accepted by the Organising Committee and after the co-ordinator of the
session makes his/her registration as a participant. The rest of the
participants of the session must also send their registration form before
the deadline.
The Organising Committee could also ask different specialised researchers to
co-ordinate certain sessions around topics of interest.
Registration Fee
The registration fee for those presenting papers will grant them the right
to present the paper and to participate in the activities programme, as well
as to receive the accreditation and all the documentation related to the
conference. It also includes the right for the paper presented to be part of
the proceedings (electronic version). The registration fee for those
presenting papers is 40 euros (or its equivalent in American dollars) for
those registering before September 10. The fee must be free of bank charges
(commissions). From September 10 till the beginning of the conference, the
fee will be 50 € (euros) or its equivalent in dollars.
The registration fee for listeners is 25 euros (or its equivalent in
dollars). The fee must be free of bank charges (commissions).
The registration fee for students will be 15 euros (or its equivalent in
dollars). The fee must be free of bank charges (commissions).
Members of the Cultural Association “With Cuba in the Distance” are free
from the payment of the registration fee, regardless of the type of
participation as long as they justify this condition and they do not owe any
membership fee.
The journalists that register with the Organising Committee will be also
free from paying the registration fee, given that the media institution
sends a registration form to the Organising Committee and the journalist
fills in the general model of registration form for all the participants,
indicating the nature of participation.
Participants´ registrations will not be effective till the Organising
Committee notifies those concerned that both the registration form and the
registration fee have been received. The registration form and the payment
of the registration fee can be made at different timess, although the
Organising Committee will only notify their registration as conference
participants to those interested when both of them have been received.
Participants must keep the notification that the Association “With Cuba in
the Distance” sends them confirming their registration. It is recommended
that you come to Cadiz with such proof.
The payment of the fee should be made effective when reserving the
participation. This can done by sending a bank transfer to the Association
“With Cuba in the Distance” to the La Caixa bank account number
2100/1607/10/0200072003, clearly indicating name and surname as well as a
reference to the type of participation (presenting a paper, listener,
sending a paper or creator).
The bank transfer will have to be made so that it is completely free of any
commission otherwise it will not be accepted. Due to the difficulties of
cashing a cheque together with the high commissions that are often similar
to the cost of the registration, the Organising Committee will not accept
cheques.
Time of Presentation and Debate
The time of presentation originally assigned to each speaker is of 20
minutes for reading plus 10 minutes for debate. The presidents of the
discussion sessions will be in charge of adapting the available time to the
particular situation of each session. They must always take into account
that the time for each discussion session cannot exceed a duration of two
hours.
According to the previous indications, the organisers of discussion sessions
are advised to reduce the number of participants to four, unless the
participants themselves agree on the contrary, although the time available
for each thematic session cannot exceed the two hour presentation and
debate.
Reception of Papers
The paper can be handed in after the closing of the conference (within a
month) to the e-mail address encuentro3@promacc.com.
Nor printed or faxed copy should be sent. It is important for the papers to
be written according to the aforementioned writing and format norms so as to
avoid conversion problems and graphic alterations while editing them for
publication.
Publication of the Proceedings
The participation in this conference implies the acceptance of the papers
being included in the proceedings of the event as well as in any other
publishing project of the Association “With Cuba in the Distance” so as to
present the papers received to as wide an audience as possible..
After the closing of the conference, all the papers presented, together with
those sent to the conference, will be grouped in an electronic proceedings
book, which will be presented during the fourth conference.
The Organising Committee does not take responsibility for the
non-publication in the electronic book of those texts that do not fulfil the
indications already pointed out, mainly as regards extension, topics and
writing norms.
The Cultural Association “With Cuba in the Distance” reserves the right to
edit a selection of the papers presented in or sent to the Conference in a
printed volume, paying strict attention to publishing criteria. To be
included in this volume, it is essential that the texts remain unpublished
elsewhere till the moment of the publication. The authors in the book will
receive a courtesy copy of the volume. This book will not be considered a
proceeding. Likewise, works can be selected for concrete anthologies or
monographs related to any of the proposed topics.
In the same way, certain texts can be handed over to journals that ask for
them (so as to promote the conference), and to be included in special
numbers about the conference, always including a note referring to the
conference where the paper was presented and letting the author know .
The possibility of a printed anthology will be announced by the Association
to the authors selected.

The official way to communicate with the Organising Committee is by e-mail:
encuentro3@promacc.com.

reasonable time. After this call for papers several informative circulars
will be sent, as needed, for the better development of the conference
preliminaries.

Conference: www.promacc.com/encuentro3.
Third International Prize to the Spreading of Cuban Culture in Exile
Simultaneously to the conference, the Association “With Cuba in the
Distance” calls for the third International Prize for the spreading of Cuban
culture in exile.
This prize, awarded for the first time in Cadiz during the first Conference
to Mr. Juan Manuel Salvat, director of Ediciones Universal, was created to
pay tribute to those Cuban figures or Cuban institutions in exile that are
recognised for the quality and significance of their artistic or social work
as well as for their support for the promotion and preservation of Cuban
culture in exile.
During the second conference, the prize was awarded to the singer, Celia
Cruz, the Cuban Collection at the University of Miami, and the French
researcher and translator Liliane Hasson.
Candidatures to the Third International Prize to the spreading of the Cuban
culture in exile can be presented both by associations and academic
institutions that wish to do so, regardless of their origin, and
individually by the members of the Association “With Cuba in the Distance.”
Candidatures must include a summary with the trajectory of the person or
institution that is proposed to be awarded the prize as well as the reasons
for such a proposal, without exceeding a 10 page limit including
attachments, photos or any other material that is to be included as support.
The candidatures that are sent by e-mail or those that do not follow the
presentation requirements mentioned earlier or those that present themselves
will not be taken into account. The candidatures must be sent to the
following address before July 31, 2004 or have a postmark of that date or
earlier on the envelope:
III Premio a la Difusión de la Cultura Cubana en el Exilio
Asoc. Con Cuba en la Distancia
Apdo. de Correos 615,
11080, Cádiz, Espańa
The Executive Committee of the Cultural Association “With Cuba in the
Distance” and the members of the Organising Committee of the third
conference, as well as renown prestigious institutions and people of the
Cuban culture will be in charge, through consultation, of finally selecting
the person or the institution to be awarded the prize from the different
proposals presented. It is a prize of recognition and it lacks any economic
endowment. It will be given in Cadiz, Spain, in November 2004 in a public
act during the celebration of the third Conference “With Cuba in the
Distance.”
Cultural Programme
As part of the Third International Conference “With Cuba in the Distance”, a
cultural programme will be organised parallel to the conference, but not
interfering with the main programme of lectures and debates.
As part of this programme, there will be reading sessions by the writers.
These readings must not exceed one and a half hour so each author must limit
himself/herself to the agreed time for the reading. The acceptance of these
sessions will be subject to their quality, variety and representativeness
and to the timetable possibilities that the main conference programme
allows.
In the case of authors that present papers, co-ordinate sessions and also
read from their works, the Organising Committee will try to satisfy
timetable request, although it asks the participants to keep in mind the
difficulties involved when satisfying preferences.
Within the programme of the third conference, the Organising Committee will
leave a free afternoon for the participants and a night for an exchange
dinner.
Other Proposals for the Cultural Programme
Those institutions that wish to propose activities to be included as part of
the cultural programme must do so before June 30 2004. The Organising
Committee can only guarantee institutional and logistic support in the case
their proposals are accepted, not taking responsibility for the economical
management of such proposals. These proposals should be addressed by e-mail
to the President of the Cultural Association “With Cuba in the Distance,”
Ms. Grace Giselle Piney Roche: asociación@promacc.com
Other activities within the cultural programme will be announced nearer the
opening of the conference.

Of General Interest
The participation in the Third International Conference “With Cuba in the
Distance” implies the acceptance of the conditions of this call. The
registration in the conference entails the participant´s agreement with such
conditions.
Although the Organising Committee will work hard to facilitate the presence
in Cadiz of the conference participants and establish mechanisms and ways of
advising and helping, the registration in the conference presupposes each
participant´s capacity and solvency to confront the needs related to their
travel as well as any possible unforeseen expenses.
Both for its experience and for the support of diverse institutions, at the
moment of making public this call, the Cultural Association “With Cuba in
the Distance” guarantees the celebration of the conference, excepting
unforeseen circumstances, which would re the commend the cancellation or
change of dates of the conference. In such case the responsibility of the
Organising Committee and the institutions that support the conference would
be limited to the return of the registration fee.
The recommendation of services independent from the organisation, such as
bars and restaurants, travel agencies, hotels, etc does not presuppose any
link with the conference other than a publicity agreement. However, the
Association “With Cuba in the Distance” guarantees that those independent
services are of renown prestige for the quality of their services. The use
of the name of the collaborating and sponsoring institutions does not imply
their identification with the individual ideas that come out from the
debates or those collected in the proceedings of the conference.
