Nature and Culture in the North American West
September 29-October 2, 2004 (Big Sky, Montana)

The Last Best Place? Or, A Tourist Runs Through It? This year's Western
Literature Association Conference--set in Big Sky, Montana--provides a
distinctive environment in which to engage the contested identities and
imagined nature of the North American West. We invite participants to
submit individual papers or panels addressing the themes below or the
topic of western literature in general. We particularly encourage papers
that

*Critique the iconography of the Old and New West in film, TV, and other
interdisciplinary venues.

*Analyze hybridity as a necessary component of western identities--in
places, populations, and cultures

*Theorize western borders and boundaries-Canadian/U.S. relations,
contact zones of race and class, queer frontiers, the making of
Yellowstone, and indigenous responses to Lewis & Clark.

*Examine the works of Montana writers.

Proposals for individual papers and panels should include a brief
abstract of each paper. Individual proposals for papers should be no
more than one page in length. Graduate students who wish to compete for
the J. Golden Taylor Prize must submit their full conference-length
paper (limit 15 pages). All submissions are due by June 1, 2004
