Call for Conference Papers

Submissions are invited for a panel entitled "Octavia Butler's _Kindred_:
25 Years," to be held at the Tenth International American Women Writers of
Color Conference (AWWOC). The convention will take place from Nov. 21 to
Nov. 23, 2004, in Baltimore, Maryland. For more information on AWWOC

PANEL DESCRIPTION:
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Octavia
Butler's 1979 neo-slave narrative, _Kindred_. This panel is held in honor
of the novel's anniversary, and papers may engage a variety of topics as
listed below. Additionally, papers may address the inclusion of _Kindred_
in the college English classroom as well as the choice of _Kindred_ as the
subject of the 2003 "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book . . ." public
reading project.

Possible topics include (but are by no means limited to) the following:
absence and loss; agency; education; death; disability; family; health;
historiography; history; literacy; marriage; memory; pain; parenting;
power relationships; resistance; solidarity; subversion; survival; trauma.
Papers may be critical or pedagogical in theme and focus.

Send 1-2 page abstracts by July 15, 2004 to Dr. Eva Tettenborn at
