The Centre for Research in the New Literatures in English (CRNLE) and the
English Department at Flinders University are planning a three-day
conference to be held in the second week of December, 2004 (6th to 8th) at
Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island.
The conference theme is JOURNEYING AND JOURNALLING aiming to broadly
address the theme of non-fictional writings of travel. Proposals may
consider (but should not be limited to):
· Life narratives relating to journeys (whether actual, virtual,
psychological or spiritual)
· Tourism
· Travel narratives/life narratives as commodities (non-fiction
bestsellers; travel guides; TV travel programmes/documentaries;
food/cooking life narratives)
· Cyber travel
· Time travel (for example, travels within memory; nostalgia)
· Travel writing and new media; on-line travel narratives (for
example, ‘travel blogs’, e-books, interactive travel writing)
· Travel writing and empire; travel writing and neo-colonialism
· Colonial and post-colonial letters, diaries, journals; narratives
of exploration.
This theme has been generated by successfully completed research projects,
previously supported by Flinders University, and others currently being
undertaken by members of CRNLE. The conference will be convened by Dr Kate
Douglas and Dr Giselle Bastin, with assistance from Nena Bierbaum, Dr Syd
Harrex and Dr Rick Hosking.
At this stage we welcome expressions of interest and a 300 word abstract of
your
proposed paper by 15th July 2004.
Sincerely,
Nena, Giselle, Kate, Syd and Rick
