CALL FOR PAPERS
University of Glasgow Graduate School of Arts and Humanities Conference

THE CULTURE OF TRAVEL
29th and 30th October 2004

Continent, city, country, society:
the choice is never wide and never free.
And here, or there...No. Should we have stayed at home,
wherever that may be?
(Elizabeth Bishop, "Questions of Travel")

Throughout the ages, travel has been central in the construction of cultural
meaning. From the ancient pilgrims and explorers to today’s global culture,
the literal and figurative dimensions of travel have defined concepts of
individual and collective identity through space and time.
We invite interpretations of travel and its culture from postgraduate
researchers working in all aspects of the Arts and Humanities.
Cross-disciplinary approaches are welcome. Topics may include but are not
restricted to

- pilgrimages and spiritual journeys
- missionary travel and crusades
- quests: mythic and profane
- travel as formation: Bildungsreisen and the Grand Tour
- fantastic travel between worlds and realities
- travelling over the body
- colonialism and conquest
- migration: economic and cultural
- travel in the age of globalisation
- cultural transversality and tourism
- travel as consumerism and the ethics of tourism
- travel for its own sake: gipsies, nomads, hobos
- the ends of travel: explorers, navigators, mercenaries
- identity, diaspora and integration
- travel literature throughout the ages
