PANEL DESCRIPTION:

As a continuation of and in response to the 2004 NEMLA panel on emerging
African American authors, this panel invites submissions on recent works
by African American novelists and short story writers. The goal of this
panel is to stimulate critical and pedagogical discussions of works by
recently published authors as well as recent works by established writers.
By focusing critical attention on works of the past 10-15 years, this
panel aims to inspire those teaching courses in African American
literature, multiethnic literature, and American literature to include
recent works in their courses. Successful papers will discuss works
published around or after 1990.

Papers may consider a variety of topics and issues including (but not
limited to) the following:
-contributions of a particular work or author to the African American
literary tradition,
-departures from African American literary traditions,
-collaboration of emerging writers,
-comparative approaches to recent African American fiction,
-recent African American fiction in the college classroom,
-recent African American fiction in courses other than African American
literature,
-interdisciplinary approaches to recent African American fiction,
-teaching strategies for recent works,
-incorporation of established works with new ones,
-other pedagogical concerns,
-the role of romance fiction in recent African American literature,
-popular reading groups and recent African American fiction,
-other topics
