CALL FOR PAPERS
WAR IN FILM, TV, AND HISTORY November 11-14, 2004
www.filmandhistory.org
Area CFP: Pacifism in War Film and Literature
Pacifism in war films and war literature is a complex and nuanced issue. It occurs as overt religious
conviction in films such as "Peace-the Battle Cry of Civilization"(1916), and "FriendlyPersuasion"(1956). It is inclusive of films with ideological and political resistance to war, as in "The Good War and Those Who Refuse to Fight It"(2000) and "Ali"(2001). It characterizes conscientious objectors as heroes and cowards. It tells stories of irony and disillusion with war, as in "Paths of Glory"(1957), "Dr. Strangelove"(1963),"The King of Hearts"(1966), "Catch 22"(1970), and many others. Finally, there is implied pacifism in a myriad of anti-war films and anti-war literature, such as "All Quiet on the
Western Front"(1930), "Tin Drum"(1979), Shakespeare's "Henry V"(1999) and "The Quiet American"(2002).
How does one talk about pacifism in film and literature?
How is patriotism portrayed? WWI?, WWII?, Korea?, Vietnam?, Iraq?.
How is heroism portrayed? Is it convincing?
What are the influences of cultural zeitgeist?
How do memory and history color our views?
How can humor reveal ironies of characterization?
What kinds of unexpected methods of social commentary exist in war films and war literature?
What formal structures and devices exist in pacifist films?
The film and History League, with the Literature/Film Association, will be holding its conference on "War in Film, Television and History" during November 11-14, 2004, near Dallas, Texas. Full details and additional area topics may be found on the web site www.filmandhistory.org.
