W.G. Sebald and the Photographic Image

Proposals are invited for a collection of original essays and visual
projects inspired by the work of W.G. Sebald. Specifically, we are
interested in exploring the role of the idiosyncratic and anti-heroic
photographs that propel and interrupt Sebald's labyrinthine text in
Rings of Saturn, Vertigo, and Austerlitz. The interest in Sebald has
crossed disciplines, igniting passionate dialogues among scholars and
practioners. This anthology hopes to capture this spirited
conversation in both theory and praxis.

Possible topics in relationship to Sebald's use of photography
include (but are not limited to):

Photography as the melancholic medium
The photo as documentary evidence
Authorship and ownership
Witnessing and evidentiary material
Taming/inviting trauma
Microhistories
Alltagsgeschichte
Barthesian "punctum"
Benjaminian "aura"
Travel photography
The relationship of text and photo in Sebald's books
Text/image differences in the native German and English translations
The fictive

In addition to essays that investigate the role of photography in
Sebald's work, we are interested in presenting documentation of
projects by visual practioners/researchers who have embraced a
"Sebaldian" methodology.

The planned volume will be the 7th in a series of publications by ICI
Press that explores the methodologies of culture. Publication is
planned for late 2005.

Deadline for one page proposal: September 15, 2004
Deadline for completed essay and project documentation: February 28, 2005
