Collage as Cultural Practice, University of Iowa, Iowa City, March=20
24-26, 2005

Call for Papers

The =93Collage as Cultural Practice=94 conference seeks to examine=20
interventionist collage practices in all media, with an emphasis on the=20=

social, political and legal implications of this method of=20
appropriation. The conference will interrogate the political and social=20=

dimensions of collage as a practice that enables oppositional=20
commentary across the cultural spectrum: from the leftist collages of=20
the Dadaists and Situationists to the unauthorized use of corporate=20
trademarks, interventions by queer activists, as well as the more=20
recent flurry of internet-distributed anti-war video collage pieces=20
that appropriate from the mainstream media in satirical ways.

We seek to bring together scholars of, and practitioners in, the media=20=

of film and video, music, literature, visual arts and beyond--putting=20
together a series of panels, performances and screenings, as well as an=20=

exhibit at the University of Iowa Museum of Art on =93Interventionist=20
