No Place Like Home: The Domestic Action Novel

at Northeast Modern Language Association / March 31-April 2, 2005 / Cambridge, MA

While the protagonist of the American novel has been generally characterized as a loner, only comfortable on the fringes of society, this vision of American heroic literature ignores novels of the 19th and 20th century that chronicle conflict and destruction within the community and/or the home. These heroes are valorized for their courage in their personal relationships as well as in the face of physical danger. Papers will explore the differing values and gender roles that these novels promote. Please send abstracts by September 15th in the email body to Elizabeth Abele, SUNY Nassau Community College; abelee_at_ncc.edu
