2004 University of Florida Conference on Comics:
"Comics and Animation: Simultaneity and Sequentiality"
October 29-30, 2004; Deadline for Abstracts: September 20, 2004.

The University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is
pleased to announce the 2004 UF Conference on Comics: Comics and
Animation. This third annual conference on comics will focus on
simultaneity and sequentiality in comics and animation. The conference
will be held in Gainesville, Florida, on October 29th and 30th 2004.

This conference will focus on comics and animation in their many forms
including both static and dynamic media. Specific forms include comic
strips, graphic novels, single-panel comics, plates, cartoons, animated
films, anime, flash/web animation, and video games. Papers may feature an
argument about particular works within these forms and/or address critical
approaches to the forms themselves.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

* History and evolution of the Comic Strip
* Graphic Novels and Comic Books: Forms, Distribution and Recognition
* Engraved plates, illuminations, and woodcuts as visual narrative
* History of Animation
* Disney's role in the development of animation and the culture industry
* Rising circulation of Anime and Manga
* Flash Animation and the role of technology in visual rhetoric
* Video Games and Digital Comics
* Theoretical models for simultaneity and sequentiality

Abstract submissions should be approximately 250 words in length.
Presentations will be 15 minutes with 5 minutes of question and
answer.

The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, September 20, 2004. We
accept abstracts in print form or in e-mail attachments. Email is
preferred.
