Deadline Extended to September 8th
Artist Filmmaking after the “Avant-Garde”
Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference, 2005
London, March 31-April 3, 2005
This panel seeks to reconsider the history and theorization of artist
filmmaking
outside a paradigm of the “avant-garde," and a critical model of
“ideological deconstruction,”
that seem increasingly unhelpful guides to the aesthetic and conceptual
topology
of these works, as well as the specific character of their
spectatorship.
What is the relationship of these works - and our discipline of film
and media studies -
to contemporary art history? How do we want to theorize the
increasingly dynamic
and complex field of contemporary time-based art within film and media
studies?
Papers may address any manner of film, video, or media installation,
as well as historiographies of the "avant-garde."
300-400 word proposals, along with the standard SCMS proposal form,
should be sent by September 8th to Andrew Uroskie at
<agalma_at_socrates.berkeley.edu>
SCMS Proposal forms are available here
