CFP: International Association of Word and Image Studies
"Elective Affinities," Philadelphia, 23-27 September, 2005
Conference panel: Cultural Traveling
This panel will explore how words and images, both collaboratively and
contentiously, mediate cross-cultural encounters. Whether conceiving of travel
in the physical or imaginative sense, or whether focusing on the movement of
people or things, papers may address any historical, geographic or disciplinary
context. Panelists might consider, but are not restricted to, a variety of
topics: the place of cultural description in narrative fiction; visual
narratives and anti-narratives of travel; constructions of temporality,
authority or authenticity; the relation between movement and fixity; forms of
ethnography and autoethnography; the verbal and visual language of documentary
film.
All queries and proposals for papers (250-300 words) should be addressed to:
affinities_at_ccat.sas.upenn.edu. The deadline for submissions is October 1,
2004. For further information, please consult the conference website at
